Positive Sport Parenting Contributes to the holistic development of young athletes

The holistic model of athlete development emphasizes not only the physical growth of an athlete but also their emotional, personal, academic, social, and financial development. This approach ensures that athletes are prepared for success not just in their sport but in life after sport. By developing well-rounded individuals, this model provides the foundation for a fulfilling life, both inside and outside of athletics.

Parents play a significant role in their children’s athletic development. Positive sport parenting is essential to creating an environment where young athletes can thrive and grow holistically. Family support, care, and guidance are fundamental in shaping the character of young athletes and preparing them for challenges beyond the sports field. Understanding the leadership role of parenting helps parents provide the right environment for their child’s athletic journey. Parents should aim to encourage and motivate their children, fostering a developmental culture, while promoting good behaviour and sportsmanship.

In today’s competitive sports environment, young athletes face immense pressure to perform. As the primary source of emotional support and approval for their children, parents should help alleviate this pressure while keeping their young athletes focused on the right goals. The following five-step process can help guide parents in supporting their children:

  1. Provide emotional support

  2. Provide enthusiastic leadership

  3. Emphasize effort and personal improvement

  4. Allow for independence

  5. Invest in the journey, not just the destination

Parents should find a balance between being demanding and nurturing. Overpraise does not build self-esteem, so it is crucial to help children understand that rewards come from genuine effort. Moreover, good sport parenting involves staying connected with the team coach, respecting the coaching staff, and engaging in open discussions without overstepping boundaries. Parents also need to recognize that their behaviour serves as a model for their children, influencing how they approach sports and teamwork.

One key aspect of positive sport parenting is understanding that parents’ dreams should not be imposed on their children. Parents must support their child’s aspirations and avoid using sports as a vehicle to fulfil their own unachieved goals.

To ensure they are positively contributing to their child’s development, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport has outlined a helpful code of conduct for parents of athletes:

Code of Conduct for Parents of Athletes
  1. I will remember that my child plays sport for his or her enjoyment, not for mine.

  2. I will encourage my child to play by the rules and resolve conflicts peacefully.

  3. I will teach my child that doing their best is as important as winning.

  4. I will praise my child for effort, fair play, and trying their best, regardless of the outcome.

  5. I will never ridicule or yell at my child for mistakes or losses.

  6. I will set a good example by applauding the good performances of all players, not just my child’s team.

  7. I will never force my child to participate in sports.

  8. I will respect the officials’ judgment and avoid questioning it publicly.

  9. I will support efforts to eliminate verbal and physical abuse in children’s sports.

  10. I will appreciate the coaches and their role in my child’s development.

  11. I agree to Play Fair.

The essence of early sport participation is fostering an environment conducive to growth and development. It is the responsibility of parents to cultivate this environment within their homes and to help their children embrace the journey of personal growth and athletic development in a healthy, balanced way.
