The Implementation of Eco-Friendly Initiatives by Athletes and Athletic Events

By Lise-Marie Maire, The Sports Financial Literacy Academy

The sports industry is increasingly adopting sustainable practices as global awareness of climate change and environmental issues continues to grow significantly. Athletic events often draw thousands of spectators and require substantial resources,. They present a unique opportunity to integrate eco-friendly initiatives effectively. By 2025, sustainability will become the standard for athletic events, ensuring these exciting celebrations of athleticism also contribute positively to a healthier planet.

Implementing eco-friendly initiatives in athletic events can truly transform the industry and set a new, responsible standard. Below are a few practical and impactful eco-friendly initiatives that organizers can put into action to reduce their environmental impact.

Waste Reduction and Recycling Programs

Waste produced at athletic events has a significant and visible environmental impact, with plastic bottles, food wrappers, and other waste often ending up in landfills. To reduce this, event organizers can set up accessible recycling bins throughout the venue and provide composting stations specifically for organic waste. Offering reusable water bottles or installing water refill stations can drastically cut down on single-use plastic waste and encourage sustainability.

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Power

Athletic events require a large amount of energy for lighting, sound systems, and broadcasting, but energy-efficient technologies can significantly minimize this impact. By switching to energy-efficient LED lights and using renewable energy sources like solar or wind power, organizers can effectively reduce an event’s carbon footprint. Hosting events in venues powered by clean energy or using temporary solar-powered setups for outdoor events can also make a notable difference in energy consumption.

Sustainable Transportation Options

Public transportation, shuttle services, and bike-share programs reduce emissions at events. For smaller events, encouraging walking or carpooling helps minimize environmental impact.

Eco-Friendly Merchandise and Packaging

Merchandise is a staple of athletic events. Organizers can work with brands that use recycled or organic materials for products. Packaging should be recyclable or biodegradable. Offering digital tickets can reduce paper waste.

Carbon Offsetting and Sustainable Practices

Carbon offsetting programs allow organizers to balance emissions by investing in renewable energy projects. Sustainable products, like eco-friendly uniforms and energy-efficient equipment, further reduce environmental damage.

The Role of Athletes in Promoting Sustainability

Athletes can encourage eco-friendly initiatives by using their platform to advocate for sustainability. Many athletes already support environmental causes, raising awareness about climate change.

Implementing eco-friendly initiatives benefits all parties involved. Organizers can improve efficiency and reduce long-term costs. Sponsors gain by aligning with sustainable values. Athletes promote positive change and lead by example.
