March 2022 Editorial: The Evolution of Female Sports

Mar 1, 2022 | Editorials

The developments in female sports are rapid and incessant. Although, gender inequality in salaries, investment, TV rights and even participation still exists, no one can doubt that the gap is briskly closing. Just last week, the US Women Soccer team won $24mn payout and guarantees regarding the future of the industry after a six-year legal battle over equal pay. In the spirt of women’s day which is in a week from now, we have decided to dedicate March to female sports.

Throughout this month we will try to focus on the positives, tease out the negatives and shed light on underappreciated female figures in the world of sports. We will discuss a variety of topics, such as the rise of female sports in the last few years and how the topography of the sports industry is changing as a result of this trend. We will also discuss inequality in the context of international competition, but also in the context of team sports and individual sports. We will also take a close look at specific athletes and how they impacted female sports and the sport industry more broadly such as the Williams sisters.
