Athletes, Blockchain Technology and Crypto-assets

By Stefanos Gregoriou, The Sports Financial Literacy Academy

Numerous sports teams now accept Bitcoin as a form of payment, and professional athletes accept it as salary or sponsorship. The Sacramento Kings were the first team to accept Bitcoin, while the Dallas Mavericks accept Bitcoin for game tickets. Additionally, crypto firms are becoming major sponsors in sports, such as BitPay sponsoring ESPN in 2014 and Cashbet partnering with Arsenal Soccer Club. High-profile athletes like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers openly join cryptocurrency sponsorships. Russell Okung of the Carolina Panthers is paid half his salary in Bitcoin, while Sean Culkin of the Kansas City Chiefs chose to convert his entire salary into Bitcoin.

Blockchain is a distributed database shared among network members. Blockchain databases or digital ledgers store information electronically. The technology provides a secure way for individuals to deal directly with each other, without an intermediary. Blockchain technology is used for transactions with cryptocurrencies, which are virtual mediums of exchange, like the US dollar in digital form. Cryptocurrency transactions are recorded in a public digital ledger, where network members can verify them.

Blockchain Technology

In recent years, the sports industry has shifted toward blockchain technology. Teams offer fans non-fungible tokens (NFTs), cryptocurrency companies sponsor naming rights of arenas, and clubs partner with crypto-related projects. Many teams and athletes accept cryptocurrency payments and sell fractional ownership of contracts. Blockchain is transforming the sports industry, increasing its adoption across teams and individual athletes.

This article explores how blockchain technology improves time and resource efficiency in the sports industry. We also discuss crowdfunding methods and how athletes sell future earnings for cash using blockchain. Blockchain’s common use is as a ledger for transactions. This application is also prominent in sports, as athletes now accept cryptocurrency payments for their salaries. For example, Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson partnered with a platform in early 2022 to receive a portion of his salary in Bitcoin. As cryptocurrencies become widely accepted, more athletes will request salaries in crypto.

Advantages of Blockchain Technology

Blockchain technology offers advantages such as more transparency and accountability in the sports industry. It enables secure storage of sensitive medical and performance data in centralized or decentralized blockchains. This guarantees data integrity, including medical tests, and protects athletes’ personal information. Such transparency benefits both athletes and their clubs by providing accurate insights. Furthermore, this data could impact player transfers, revolutionizing the market.

For several years, pro athletes have been selling small portions of future earnings for cash. These agreements include salaries and royalty rights for players’ images and brands. For example, if an athlete earns $20,000 monthly now but expects to earn three times more in five years, they can sell a percentage of future earnings for cash now. These agreements are made through smart contracts, powered by blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Decentralized crowdfunding and tokenized shares reduce intermediary fees compared to traditional methods. Blockchain loyalty programs let fans become voting members of clubs and franchises. Fans with digital tokens can vote on decisions like player contracts and branding. As fan influence grows, owners may face challenges as fans demand more control.

Although blockchain technology is still in its early stages, it has already disrupted many industries. It solves existing problems and uncovers new challenges.
