In the summer leading to the 1997-98 NBA season, the Bulls front office decided to rebuild. They had just won two consecutive titles. But pressure from players and media led to a one-year suspension of that decision. Coach Phil Jackson dubbed it “The Last Dance.” The outcome is known, but the documentary next Sunday will be a must-watch.
We are the superstars now, all in this together. The coronavirus pandemic has put us in unprecedented conditions. Despite the uncertainty and suspension of normal life, we must prepare for our next “last dance.”
In sports, attitude is key. It shapes your actions, goals, and work ethic. These are the three pillars of success. Do the right things, focus on your goal, and work hard. It starts with your attitude and mental toughness. These are transferable skills that set athletes apart. Now is the time to use them again.
The pandemic has shocked the sports world. Leagues and college sports are in a state of hiatus. The NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA have granted spring-sport athletes an extra year of competition. This ensures athletes have a fair chance to compete for four years. It’s a lifeline for the 2% of NCAA athletes who turn pro each year. It’s another “last dance” in the making.
The downside of the pandemic is the constant media focus. However, there is an upside, especially for athletes. College athletes have had more time with family. They caught up on academics and enjoyed a more relaxed routine. It’s okay to slack off a bit during these times. But remember, another “last dance” is just around the corner. As an ancient philosopher said, “the only constant thing in life is change.”
Now is the time to do what you’ve been avoiding. It’s time to prepare for your future, both as an athlete and a person. Use this time for reflection and inner growth. It’s a great opportunity to read, think about your future, and set new goals. It’s the best time to run that 5k every morning, hit the gym, and perfect your skills. A new academic year and sporting season are coming. Success depends on your attitude.
There are two types of people right now. Those who wait and feel sorry for themselves, and those who are working hard for next year’s championship. Which one will you be?
Surviving this pandemic is no small victory. Millions are facing hardship, and some will lose their jobs and loved ones. If you’re a college athlete with extended eligibility, consider using this time wisely. Perhaps now is the moment to explore a Master’s degree since you’ll be on campus anyway.
There will always be another season. Your work is your investment, and your attitude is your capital. The hard work you put in will not go to waste. It will be ready when preparation meets opportunity. In life, there’s never a “last dance.” It’s always the last until the next one.
